Weightlifting: Rachel Matthis

What do you enjoy about being on the weightlifting team? I think it’s important to build muscle, and being part of the team and working out is very healthy for you. It also keeps me mindful of my health, and I think that makes me more successful in general.

How long have you been on the team? My sister originally joined the team, and so she encouraged me to join. I’ve been on the team for three years now. I am so glad because I instantly fell in love with it. Everyone on the team cares so much for everyone else and supports any weight I do.

Describe one of your best moments in athletics. Some of the best times are when I max out at a meet. I always feel better when I can do more weight than I think I can do. It’s a great feeling of accomplishment.

Coach Schubert says … “It’s just 5 pounds, you can do 5 extra pounds.” This is just the motivation I need to do better and get more weight at a meet. Sometimes I feel like I can’t do it, but Schubert’s encouragement always helps me.
