Firefighters lit the grills at 5 a.m. for a community appreciation barbecue. Smells of BBQ pulled pork and hamburgers filled the air as the community stopped by Founders Park for a delicious meal on March 12. Put on by the Islamorada Firefighters Benevolent Association, the annual Givin’ It Back Barbecue saw locals and visitors filling their plates with BBQ pork, hot dogs, baked beans, coleslaw and corn. Per Chief Terry Abel, it’s a way to give thanks to the local and community. The barbecue was free to locals, while nonresidents paid a small fee to enjoy some home cooking. With food came some music courtesy of Micah and Luke Glenn.
