Leadership Monroe County celebrated the graduation of its Class XXXII with a “Nautical Fun in the Sun” community festival and alumni reunion on May 3 at Marathon Community Park.
The nonprofit community leadership program is designed for Florida Keys residents who are active in leadership roles within the private sector, government or community organizations. Through a series of sessions over eight months, participants examine the fundamental public and private sectors throughout the county. The program also gives participants the opportunity for awareness and discussion of issues affecting the Keys. These experiences provide connections and alliances across the county.
The monthly sessions are led by experts and leaders in the fields covered, including tourism, the Keys economy, environmental issues, education, the levels of government, the judiciary and law enforcement system, the historical and current military significance in the Keys, emergency management, health care, the arts, the nonprofit sector and media.
Established in 1992 to address the changing needs and concerns of the county, develop a group of well-educated leaders, help guide the community in a positive direction and foster nonpartisan, county-wide alliances, the program is governed by an alumni member board.

Each graduating class designs a group project to benefit the Keys community. Class XXXII raised $17,000 for Womankind women’s health organization through a raffle.
The application period for Class XXXIII will open in July. More information is available from Michael Shields at 305-394-3804 or at leadershipmonroecounty.org.
