CONCHS & ‘CANES WRESTLING NOTCH INDIVIDUAL WINS AHEAD OF KEY WEST INVITE

Key West’s grapplers were in Miami at the Bear Down Duals held at Mater Lakes Academy on Dec. 9. The Conchs finished in second place at the event and had strong showings from Alfredo Corrales, Abram Canet and Dost Bahktiyorov, who went undefeated for the boys team. On the girls team, Sheyla Figueira and Natalie Arguello won their weight classes with undefeated showings, giving Key West a lot of hope to go far again this season. The Conchs will be busy this weekend, hosting and wrestling in their annual Key West Invitational tournament. Action begins Friday, Dec. 15 at 4:30 p.m. in Key West’s Bobby Menendez Gymnasium.

Coral Shores traveled to Fort Myers to participate in the SFCA King’s Classic Wrestling Tournament. The ’Canes fared well in the lower weight classes, with 106-lb. Steven DeRobertis placing fourth in his weight class and Sebastian McCoy placing second in the 113-lb. category. Coral Shores will have a shorter trip this week as they will join the Conchs at the Key West invitational this weekend.

Tracy McDonald fled to the Keys from the frozen mountains of Pennsylvania hours after graduating from college and never looked back. She is a second generation coach and educator, and has taught in the public school system for over 25 years. She and her husband met at a beginning teacher meeting in 1997 and have three children born and raised in Monroe County. In her free time, McDonald loves flea markets, historical fiction and long runs in the heat.
