Easter services going virtual, drive-through

Easter service will be treated a little differently this year due to social distancing requirements allowing only groups of fewer than 10. While many pastors will be taking service to the virtual world with their congregations, others are finding unique ways to bring people together.

GOOD FRIDAY – APRIL 10

  • Spirit & Truth Ministries in Tavernier will hold its annual Good Friday Cross walk at 9:30 a.m. at the church, located at MM 89.7, Oceanside. The walk will go to Tavernier Town Center and back to Spirit & Truth.
  • Online Good Friday observance by Bluewater In The Keys at noon. Watch on BluewaterTV on Youtube or on the Bluewater In The Keys’ Facebook page.
  • Basilica of St. Mary Star of the Sea in Key West will live stream Holy Week masses. Good Friday includes a 2:35 p.m. live stream from The Chaplet of Divine Mercy and a 3 p.m. live stream of the Passion of the Lord in English and Spanish.
  • Key West United Methodist Church will host an online service at noon on Good Friday. This service will be on Facebook Live and available through the conference call as well. The call-in number is 1-302-202-1109 and participant code 217542.

HOLY SATURDAY – APRIL 11

Basilica of St. Mary Star of the Sea in Key West will offer a 3 p.m. live stream Easter Vigil Mass in English and at 4:15 p.m. in Spanish. These will be the only Easter masses for The Basilica. There is no mass on Easter Sunday.

EASTER SUNDAY

DRIVE-IN SERVICE AT BLUEWATER IN THE KEYS

Pastor Phil Underwood is finding a unique way other than going virtual for Easter mass. Located at MM 86.4, bayside, in Islamorada, Bluewater In The Keys will be holding a 45-minute, drive-through service at noon. Underwood said there’s enough space in the front yard for some 20 cars to park facing the front porch, where he will be delivering the service. Parking attendants will be on hand to assist. A sound system will be placed so everybody can hear, and people can bring chairs if they want to get out and sit by their cars. Underwood said everyone will be distanced away from each other. “We’re even going to do communion with these pre-packaged, sanitized communion cups that have the wafer and the juice in the same cup,” he said. “Somebody will be handing them out with gloves.” WIth the yard being rather small, Underwood said cars will have to stay until the end of service before leaving.
