Key West’s lacrosse s quad played two games last week, first destroying Palmer Trinity March 13 in a 19-0 thrashing. Brooks Pellicier and Raffie Rice had four goals apiece while Zack Payne and Calvin Mercer netted hat tricks. Owen Dougherty faced off for the Conchs, winning all seven takes and Mateo Lopez earned a rare shutout in goal with four saves. On Mar. 15, St. Augustine paid a visit to the Southernmost City, beating the home team 17-10. Lopez was fantastic in goal, registering 17 saves and Carlo Vernieri stepped up and scored five goals. Pellicier found the net twice, but the Yellow Jackets took home the win. The Conchs stand at 6-4 this season with four games to go before districts. Next up for Key West will be a trip to Tavernier to play Coral Shores on Wednesday, March 26 in what should be a fantastic matchup. Key West won the last meeting of the Keys’ only lacrosse teams, 8-7.
After a pair of losses last week, Coral Shores is 6-5 with five games to go prior to districts. The Hurricanes headed to Westminster Christian on March 11 and gave the Warriors a strong game despite missing nearly half their starting lineup due to illness, injuries and early spring break travel. James Mitchell scored three goals and Christian Gonzalez added one plus three assists. Lucas Carballo and Yandel Chaguaseda netted two apiece and Finn McDonough scored one in the 10-9 loss. Brock Bynum saved 13 from the net, keeping the Hurricanes in the game until the final whistle.
On March 14, the ’Canes hosted the Yellow Jackets, visiting from St. Augustine on a spring break trip. The Yellow Jackets buzzed past the Hurricanes to a 9-2 win. Bynum was solid in goal again, saving nine and picking up seven ground balls. McDonough scored one, had an assist on the other goal and was credited with four takeaways. Gonzalez netted the other goal and Jace Jackson proved a formidable force, winning 92% of his faceoffs. Coral Shores will have spring break week to recover and will be in full force as they return.
