All three of Monroe County’s volleyball teams tested their skills last week, with multiple in-county matchups as well as tournament action.
To start things off, Coral Shores hosted Marathon on Aug. 25, defeating the Dolphins 3-0. The Hurricanes saw action from 11 players, with strong serving and hard hits becoming synonymous with the Keys’ team to beat this season.
Abby Leigh served up five aces and registered three kills, three digs and a dozen assists against the Fins. Celene Walker was perfect at the service line with three aces, adding 11 kills and a dozen digs of her own. Coralyn Frimpter logged a pair of aces, 10 kills, eight digs and a block, while Maddie Jordan was also perfect at the line, adding an ace, nine assists and five digs.
Two nights later, South Homestead made the trip to Tavernier to try its luck against Coral Shores. In a battle of Hurricanes, Coral Shores dispatched South Homestead 3-2, with strong performances from multiple athletes making the win possible. Leigh dropped seven aces and added four kills, a block, 21 assists and 17 digs. Marina Daniel registered seven kills, a block and a dig, while Jillian Thiery had six kills and a dig. Jordan had another perfect night at the service line, adding 17 assists and five digs. Frimpter had two aces, 16 kills, nine digs, a pair of blocks and an assist, while Walker added an ace, nine digs and an impressive 19 kills to her stats.
After taking care of business on their home court, the Hurricanes lost a pair at the Conch Cup on Aug. 28 and 29, falling to Wellington 2-1 and South Fork 2-0.
The Lady Conchs also found the win column last week. Key West met its closest neighbor, Marathon, on the Dolphins’ home court on Aug. 26, defeating the Fins in three sets. But the match was no walk in the park for the Lady Conchs. The Fins took them to extended play in the third set, but Key West prevailed 3-0 to pick up an in-county win before hosting its annual Conch Cup tournament.
Key West won again Aug. 28 against Westminster Academy in a 2-1 match, but lost to South Fork 2-0 later that night. The following afternoon, the Lady Conchs got back on track with a 2-1 win over Wellington, picking up momentum as the young team continues to find its groove.
