At Key Dives’ monthly Trash Trek, scuba divers worked together to remove derelict traps, line, anchors and jigs from Islamorada reefs. Their grand total for the 3 dives was 388 pounds. As with every month, the dive shop offers the first 10 spots to locals for free to help with conservation efforts. “We couldn’t do this alone. It’s a community effort, and any way we can help people get involved, we will,” owner Mike Goldberg has told the Weekly. All marine debris removal is done under permits from the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and funded through grants to help more shops run community cleanup dive trips. Starting this collaboration with the sanctuary and the community years ago, Key Dives has led the way in debris cleanup efforts. Now, the shop is hoping to share its knowledge and help other shops join the effort.
