On Feb. 15, first responders throughout Monroe County came together at the Marathon airport for a full-scale disaster drill. Required by the Federal Aviation Administration, the event takes place in Marathon every three years. The drill was a collaborative effort among Monroe County Emergency Management, Marathon Fire Rescue, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Monroe County Fire Rescue, Florida Highway Patrol, and numerous other local and federal agencies. More than 30 volunteers lent their time to help these agencies prepare for future airport emergencies.

“The lessons we learn from the response to this realistic scenario are invaluable,” said Marathon airport manager Micheal Legere.
