A 61-year-old Key Largo man was arrested Tuesday after attempting to shoot his roommate in the head with a crossbow. The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said George Henry Balboni is being charged with attempted murder.

“Violence is the never the answer to a roommate dispute,” said Sheriff Rick Ramsay. “It’s much easier to separate yourself from the situation, but this person did the total opposite and now faces very serious criminal charges.”

The sheriff’s office was called to a residence on the 700 block of Largo Road at approximately 6 a.m. regarding a disturbance. The 69-year-old male victim led deputies to Balboni who was lying in the front yard of the home and bleeding from the face. There were several arrows on and near Balboni where he was found.

The victim stated Balboni lured him to a vehicle on the property and tried to kill him by shooting him with an arrow but missed. The victim suffered a minor cut to his ear from the arrow. A fight ensued. The victim took the crossbow from Balboni and hit him with it, knocking him to the ground.

Deputies said Balboni admitted to shooting the crossbow at the victim. Balboni stated he tried to kill the victim, whom he described as a “parasite.” Balboni further stated he has no remorse.

Balboni was taken to Mariners Hospital in Tavernier for injuries to his head. The victim was not taken to the hospital.

The two roommates have a history of arguments and have lived together for several years, according to statements made by both men. Balboni stated the victim went through his trash on Monday and found vodka, which angered Balboni. Balboni stated he decided to kill the victim at that point. Balboni was taken to jail.
