Nothing lasts forever, but in Key West, even 60 years is an impressive accomplishment for a business, much less a nonprofit organization, where funding streams are fickle and money is always tight.

But the Monroe Association for Remarkable Citizens (MARC ) has managed.for six decades, today offering life skills, jobs and classes to adults with developmental disabilities.

It was in 1966 that MARC, Inc. was founded by a dedicated group of parents and community members in Monroe County who wanted to create greater opportunities, dignity, support and inclusion for their children with developmental and intellectual disabilities. At the time, students with disabilities were neither included nor allowed in. public school classrooms, said Diana Flemard, the now-semi-retired  executive director

Originally known as the Monroe Association for Retarded Children, the organization expanded its services to adults over the age of 18 and changed its name in 1978 to the Monroe Association for Retarded Citizens. In 2007, the organization adopted its current name, Monroe Association for ReMARCable Citizens (MARC), reflecting evolving language and its continued commitment to respecting, empowering, and celebrating the individuals it serves.

So, where did the name “MARC House” come from? The name grew from the organization’s early beginnings in residential care, when MARC opened its first group home in 1974. Over time, the name MARC House became a familiar part of the community and remains closely associated with the organization today.

For six decades, MARC has provided services that help adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities build independence, develop skills, find meaningful employment, and participate fully in their communities. Today, MARC’s programs include two group homes, supported living apartments, Adult Day Training focused on life skills development, supported employment opportunities, and community inclusion activities that encourage individuals to participate in local events and build meaningful connections throughout the Florida Keys.

Throughout its history, MARC has been supported by thousands of Monroe County residents, families, volunteers, staff members, community partners, and donors who have helped advance its mission. The organization remains committed to promoting independence, self-determination, inclusion, and personal growth while advocating for the rights, abilities, and potential of the individuals it serves.

In 2026, MARC celebrated its 60th anniversary with the theme, “Be ReMARCable,” honoring six decades of service and encouraging the Florida Keys community to embrace kindness, acceptance, opportunity and inclusion for all.
