A large crowd assembled at Bayview Park on Dec. 14, for the annual City of Key West Menorah lighting ceremony, held just before sunset and marking the beginning of Hanukkah, the eight-day Jewish Festival of Lights. Hosted by the City of Key West and emceed by commissioner Samuel Kaufman, blessings were offered by Rabbi Shimon Dudai from Congregation B’Nai Zion and Rabbi Yaakov Zucker from Chabad of the Florida Keys.
Key West Mayor Dee Dee Henriquez and other community members lit the menorah lights. Arts, crafts and games were also available for the kids at Bayview Park.
This year’s celebration drew a larger-than-normal crowd and included a somber remembrance of the 15 Jewish people who were killed in a mass shooting on Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia, where hundreds of Jewish families were gathered to celebrate the start of Hanukkah.
