The Key West police are always on duty to serve and protect, but this month, they’re protecting Keys women from more than criminals.

The police department joined forces with Zonta women’s service club to wear and sell pink police patches in honor of October’s Breast Cancer Awareness month.

Key West Police Officers will be wearing special pink and black patches with their insignia during breast cancer awareness month.

Civilians are invited to purchase these one-of-a-kind patches now. All of the proceeds will go to Zonta Club of Key West’s Foundation for breast cancer screenings for uninsured and underinsured women who live in the Lower Keys.

Purchase one of these exclusive patches for $10 at the Key West Police Department, 1604 N. Roosevelt Blvd., and ask for Lt.  Matthew Haley or call 305-809-1000. Each patch costs $10.

But that’s not all Zonta is doing to “save the tatas.”

The club will hold its 28th annual ABC 5K and 10K Walk/Run at 7 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 31. (The ABC stands for Awareness Breast Cancer.)

The money raised from this event also goes to providing important preventive services for women who otherwise cannot afford them.

“This event saves women’s lives here in the Keys,” organizers said. “Zonta has been able to provide over 3,000 mammograms to local women over the past 25 years and has never turned any woman in need away.”

Due to this year’s pandemic, the run/walk will take place virtually, meaning supporters all over the world can participate in the event that raises funds to prevent breast cancer in the Florida Keys.

Runners and walkers will have until Monday, Nov. 2 to finish the race and log their completion online.

The first 100 participants to sign up will receive a special breast cancer awareness participation medal that can be picked up in Key West. Those living outside Key West can pay for shipping and Zonta will send it.

Online early registration is $25 for the 5K and $30 for the 10K. Register Now at:  https://runsignup.com/Race/FL/KeyWest/ZontaABC5K
