Keys golfers earn birdies, eagles & bragging rights in the Southernmost City

Key West’s Dominick Novotny plays a shot out of a bunker at the Key West Golf Course.

Key West golfers claimed the boys team title in a three-way matchup against Marathon and Coral Shores on Oct. 14 at the Conchs’ home course, but it was a Dolphin who turned in the lowest round of the day. Marathon’s Roco Piscetello fired a one-under-par 34 to earn medalist honors, leading a competitive field of golfers from across the Keys.

Piscetello wasted little time getting started, opening his round with a birdie on the first hole before adding an eagle on No. 3. His early success helped secure a four-stroke victory over a pair of Key West golfers.

Despite Piscetello’s individual win, the Conchs prevailed in the team standings with a combined 158. Marathon finished five strokes back at 163, while Coral Shores placed third with 196.

Key West’s Mason Titensor and Jakub Krytinar tied for second place with matching rounds of 38. Another Conch, Geo Twyman, shared fourth place with Coral Shores’ Scout Oliver, each shooting 39.

Marathon’s Emmett Merryman and Coral Shores’ Sawyer Hendrix tied for sixth at 40, while the Dolphins’ Cullen Coleman-Sayer and Key West’s Dominick Novotny shared eighth place with rounds of 43. The Conchs’ Brody Catena rounded out the top 10 with a 44.

In the girls competition, Key West swept the top two spots, with Lexi Finigan edging teammate Mary Alice Davila by a single stroke. Finigan carded a 51 to earn medalist honors, while Davila finished runner-up at 52.

Lexi Finigan putts into the third hole.

Marathon claimed the next two positions. Elleanna Mowry placed third with a 58, followed by teammate Makenna Haines in fourth with a 61. Key West’s Stella Tutlewski finished fifth at 64, while the Conchs’ Charlize Lopez and Coral Shores’ Woodsley Franklin tied for sixth with matching rounds of 66.

Marathon and Coral Shores met again on Oct. 16 at Miami’s Briar Bay Golf Course, where the Dolphins claimed a 148-168 victory in the boys’ competition.

This time it was Merryman’s turn to lead the field. The Marathon golfer carded a one-over-par 32 on Briar Bay’s nine-hole layout, using birdies on the second and fifth holes to top the field.

Coral Shores’ Scout Oliver finished second with a 35, followed closely by Marathon’s Jackson Millard and Cullen Coleman-Sayer, who placed third and fourth with scores of 36 and 37, respectively.

The Hurricanes’ Nash Andruski and Sawyer Hendrix tied for fifth with rounds of 42, while Marathon’s Jacob Reed finished seventh with a 43. The Dolphins’ Caden Pitcher placed eighth at 46, followed by teammate Ethan Wohlers with a 47. Coral Shores’ Jack Massey completed the top 10 with a 49.

In the girls competition, Marathon’s Haines earned the top score with a 44, completing a strong week that also included her fourth-place finish against Key West and Coral Shores. The Hurricanes’ Valerie Gabriel finished second with a 54. The two were the only girls competing at Briar Bay.
