For any person who likes to carefully plan things, control situations or has a touch of OCD, this would be nightmare. “One Night Stand” at the Studios of Key West calls on spontaneous, brave, fearless creatives to put on a 10-minute, full-scale theatrical production in less than 24 hours. This show business exercise has proven to be outstandingly successful, fun and funny to watch since the Studios started challenging thespians back in 2007. For two shows only on Saturday, June 30, five writers will receive an inspirational line that must be incorporated in a play … and then write, direct, and put on a show with less than 24 hours preparation. Oh, and they aren’t assigned their actors until then until the morning of, so no favorites either. It’s truly a bit of mayhem and it’s fabulous.
Cliff Murray is accepting the “One Night Stand” challenge for the first time.
“I’ve never done anything like this before, but I think it’s a brilliant idea for bringing together many aspects of our creative community,” said Murray. “I love that it’s all about art and collaboration with neighbors and friends, both old and new. My tentative plan is to keep it light and funny, but that may go out the window on Friday when we get our common props and lines.”
Gearing up their coffee pots and bravado, local actor Joe Mitchell is going at it alone for the first time as a writer, although this will be his third time taking part. Scripts are due Saturday morning at the Studios where rehearsal will take place all day.
“I would love to say it’s fun but that’s not the right word … maybe more like ‘terrifying.’ To know that what you’re putting on paper tonight will be performed tomorrow night involves several parts of one’s ego, mainly the fear center with long stops in the self-doubt department and the ‘Oh my god what am I doing here!’ office,” said Mitchell.
A Queen (or King) of One Night Stand will be selected at random from the 9 p.m. audience and will receive a fabulous door prize worth $300, as well as international fame for life. For more information or to buy tickets, contact The Studios of Key West at 305-296-0458 or info@tskw.org. Tickets can also be purchased at The Studios’ box office at 533 Eaton St.
“I’m excited to return to ‘One Night Stand’ after a decade hiatus. This is a fantastic and terrifying event. I’m looking forward to staying up until the wee hours writing a script that will be thought provoking and insightful. Who are we kidding? It’s going to be ridiculous and probably include a vulgar joke or two.”
