Pride in a pandemic – Mini parade makes a splash

LARRY BLACKBURN/Keys Weekly Island House, a men's-only guesthouse in Key West, honored the otherwise-postponed Key West Pride with a miniature parade on June 7.

Although the majority of Key West Pride events — parties, plays, comedians, concerts, art exhibits and, yes, cocktails — were postponed until November, a miniature parade took place June 7 on Duval Street.

Gay pride events typically occur in June to commemorate the Stonewall riots that occurred at the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City’s Greenwich Village neighborhood.

On June 28,1969, police raided the Stonewall Inn. The customers stood their ground and fought back when police became violent.

The rebellion is widely considered one of the most important events leading to the gay rights movement in the United States.
