SCENES FROM THE 2024 SOMBRERO BEACH RUN

Dad Dale, left, and mom Courtney Coburn make the Kids Fun Run a family affair with 2-year-old daughter Kaylynn.

A short supply of sunshine didn’t deter racers at the 2024 Sombrero Beach Run, as hundreds of athletes took on the challenge of their choice with the morning’s 10K race, 5K walk/run and 15K challenge.

The ladies showed the gentlemen how distance racing is done to open the morning’s 10K, with women from all age groups, led by Helena Bursa’s 44:23 performance, capturing the top six overall places. The men answered back in the 5K, led by Anthony Kelhower (17:47) and Kyle Leaming (18:16) ahead of a pack of five Marathon High School distance runners. The 15K challenge, which tasks runners with starting a 5K race just minutes after finishing their 10K, saw the women put on a master class yet again. Bursa (1:05:53) led a pack of five females with the lowest combined race times.

Now in its 17th year, the annual weekend of runs, sun and fun is sponsored by Key West Southernmost Runners. Proceeds benefit Keys Area Interdenominational Resources, a Marathon-based nonprofit organization that provides food pantry, housing assistance, emergency and relocation support among other services.
