A Coral Shores swimming sensation was recognized by the Village of Islamorada on Oct. 7 for recently completing a roughly 8-mile swim to Alligator Lighthouse and back. Carolyn Wightman, village Parks & Rec Citizens Advisory Committee chair, presented a certificate of achievement to Hurricanes swimmer Layne Smith for being the first solo swimmer to complete the race on Sept. 13 with a time of 3 hours, 39 minutes and 50 seconds. Layne was accompanied on the swim by her dad, Cale, who was a support kayaker. In one of the most celebrated open water swims in the world, 320 swimmers from 30 states and four countries set out on the course from the shoreline of Amara Cay Resort to the lighthouse.
