Local first responders recently came to the rescue of some animals in the Upper Keys.

Islamorada Fire Chief Terry Abel was supervising the breakdown of the Gigantic Nautical Market at Founders Park the morning of Feb. 23, when crazy winds whipped a large tent on the beach. As he supervised the scene, Abel noticed two tiny baby squirrels struggling and needing help. They appeared affected by the cool and windy weather the area began to experience the night before.

Fortunately, Abel was able to warm them up and called a wildlife rehabber to care for them. They were expected to recover and return to the park.

Days later, Key Largo Fire Rescue crews were sent to an interesting call of their own — a monkey in a tree at Transylvania Avenue. Unfortunately, the monkey had other plans and wasn’t ready to come down for rescuers. The monkey eventually came down from the tree, returning to its owner.

“Even the wildlife keeps us on our toes,” Key Largo Fire Rescue wrote on Facebook.
