Just days after Key West filled and sealed a time capsule in honor of the island’s 200th anniversary as an American territory on March 25, a Key West committee is working to unearth another time capsule that was buried 50 years ago near Mallory Square.

“We are still doing our research and can hopefully do some ground-penetrating radar to pinpoint its exact location, and hopefully recover it with permission of the property owner,” said Key West businessman Jim Gilleran.

He’s working with former Monroe County Commissioner Jerry Hernandez, former Key West Mayor Dennis Wardlow and business owner Paul Menta, who coordinated the Key West 200th celebration and time capsule.

“I’m a little nervous to see what they decided to bury 50 years ago,” Wardlow said, laughing as someone chimed in with a suggestion of “square grouper, perhaps.”

“They buried the time capsule when they dedicated a plaza downtown near Mallory Square, but there is no marker for it, so we have some residents who were in high school in 1972 and remember coming downtown for the capsule’s burial,” Gilleran said. “We’re hoping one of them remembers the exact location. We’re going to continue our research and will obviously contact any nearby property owners once we identify its location.”Anyone who recalls the location of the 1972 time capsule is asked to email jamesgilleran@gmail.com.
