The Florida Keys Fishing Guides Association’s fifth annual Kids Fishing Expo is set for Sunday, March 15 from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Founders Park in Islamorada. The event takes place on the great lawn and is open to kids 16 and younger; there is no fee to enter.
Young anglers will learn how to spin- and fly-cast, tie flies, tie knots and throw a cast net, along with other activities. Children under age 13 must be accompanied by an adult.
Spin- and fly-casting competitions from 9:30 a.m. to noon will feature trophies for distance and accuracy. The age groups will be 5 and under, 6-9, 10-12 and 13-16. Awards will be presented for first, second and third place, within each of the four age groups. A cast net throwing and tug-o-war contest will be available for all participants.
Local law enforcement agencies will be on hand as well as local fishing guides and friends to teach kids about fishing techniques and responsible stewardship of the environment. Lunch will be provided, along with water and sodas. A raffle will be held for the kids after the awards. Each kid will receive a raffle ticket with their entry. Early registration is encouraged with prizes for early entries. To register, visit www.fkfga.com.
