Keys golfers had one last meetup prior to their district matches held on Oct. 23. In their final meeting, Key West pulled ahead, winning the boys match with the low team score of 192. Coral Shores took second with 207 and Marathon was third with 216.
It was senior night for the Conchs, but it would be a trio of juniors who stormed the podium. Andrew Bassett had the best score of the day, shooting a 41. Fellow Conch Peyton Zubieta scored a 43, winning second place. In third was Derek Ramos of Coral Shores with a 47. The best senior score of the day in the boys’ division would come from Michael Merryman of Marathon, who shot a 48 for fourth place. Key West senior Smith Switzer was fifth with a 49. Rounding out the top 10 were Preston Carroll (51) and Tanel Irons (52) of Coral Shores in sixth and seventh, Marathon’s Mason Thornton (55) and Cullen Coleman-Sayer (56) in eighth and ninth, and a three-way tie for 10th place, with Marathon’s Dylan Ziels and Roco Piscetello shooting a 57 along with Coral Shores’ Aiden Althouse.
On the girls’ front, Marathon senior Summer Haines, likely the school’s only representative at districts, won first place with a 52. Hurricane Gabby Thomas was next, scoring a 56. Conchs Maeve O’Hearn, Althea Olsen and Parker Curry took spots three through five scoring 65, 73 and 77 respectively.
Next week, Coral Shores and Marathon will have some friendly competition sprinkled in at the FHSAA District 16 1A Championship match held at Crandon Golf Course in Key Biscayne. Key West will play at Grand Palms Sabal Course in Pembroke Pines in the 2A Championships. Teams and individuals with low scores have the chance to move on to regionals on Oct. 30 for Marathon and Coral Shores and the following day for Key West.
