“AJ is one of the hardest working athletes you’ll find at Key West High School. He isn’t the school record holder in the 50 free by accident.” – Key West athletic director Justin Martin

On Oct. 4, sprint swimmer Alexander “AJ” Smith raced to a first-place finish in the 50 yard freestyle race at Wellington High School. Smith’s time of 21.37 seconds was not only good enough for a win and a personal best; he broke the five-year-old school record as well. In what head coach Lori Bosco described as a phenomenal race, Smith laid the groundwork for a late season dash to states, a feat he achieved last season and hopes to repeat this November. For his remarkable performance in the pool and his dedication to improvement for himself and the Conchs’ swimming program, AJ Smith is the Keys Weekly Athlete of the Week.
