MARATHON NEIGHBOR OF THE WEEK: RANDY CULMER

We’ll admit: though Keys Weekly is tasked with reporting the news in the Keys every week, we’ve got a problem. No matter how many individuals appear in the pages of each edition of our papers, there are always so many more of our community members who deserve to be recognized. In an effort to shine a spotlight on more of the incredible individuals who live and work in these islands, Keys Weekly is proud to spotlight our Neighbor of the Week feature, dedicated to celebrating a community member with each issue. This week’s Neighbor of the Week is one of the many individuals responsible for Travis Pastrana’s successful Boot Key Bridge jump last week. Operating the crane for Marathon Seawalls and Docks, Randy Culmer was responsible for ferrying Pastrana’s stunt vehicle from Boot Key back to mainland Marathon after each of Travis’ two successful jumps.

RANDY CULMER

Marathon Seawalls and Docks

How did you come to Marathon? I was born and raised in Marathon.

What would you like to be remembered for? I’d like to be remembered by the quality work I do.

What song always gets you on the dance floor? I can’t dance. I’m a gringo.

What is your dream vacation? Africa

What is the last book you read or TV show you binged? I binge watched Yellowstone again. It’s too good not to.

What would you do if you won the lottery? I’d buy a house on the water. God knows you need to win the lottery to do so.

What’s one thing that is always on a menu, but you will never try? I’m not a picky person. If it’s on the menu, it’s getting eaten.

What’s one thing most people never knew about you? It’s a small town … people know more about me than I do.

Two truths and a lie: My middle name is Eugene, I’m a crane operator, and I love Mondays. (If you guessed that last week’s Neighbor of the Week, Jean Etienne, doesn’t love Amazon as he works his routes for USPS, you guessed right. We gave you a layup on that one.)

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received or given (or, is there a piece of advice you think is overrated or wrong?) All advice is good advice.
How nervous were you while moving a million-dollar car for the bridge stunt? I mean, my seat in the crane has a tear in it from me clenching so hard. The first lift always sucks, but the second was clockwork.
