New shop features high-end fishing gear - A person standing in front of a store - The Angler's Closet

The Angler’s Closet opens in Marathon.

Although they own another retail space, the Carlsons couldn’t fit everything they wanted to sell inside it. So on Black Friday, the duo opened a new store — The Angler’s Closet — on the west end of Marathon. The shelves and racks are filled with quality fishing clothing, accessories and tools of the trade.

“I always wanted to break off from Big Time Tackle and offer more apparel choices. Plus, this stuff is fun,” said Leanys Carlson, looking around her new domain.

Leanys’ husband, Jack, co-owns the Big Time Tackle store on the east end of town with Biff Goss.

Everything in the store is brand name and high quality: Costa and Maui sunglasses, Pelagic and Huk and SeaFear clothing, Yeti and Corkcicle coolers and tumblers, Havainas flip flops.

“I’ve worn these Brazilian-made shoes since they were first available in the United States,” Leanys said. “I think my first pair lasted 10 years.”

Leanys said she chose the store’s stock with quality and name recognition in mind.
“The Luli Fama bathing suits will be arriving soon, plus cover ups,” she said. “The suits sell themselves; the line has a reputation for quality.”

The grand opening was on Black Friday and Leanys said the event was well-attended. So much so, she has to reorder just days after opening the door.

The store mainly features apparel, but there’s a cute selection of sunscreen and jewelry, the latter featuring sea glass and starfish. There’s also a basic fishing supplies: frozen bait, Penn reels, a huge selection of Mustad hooks, fillet knives … and Loomis rods.

“We’re the exclusive dealer in Marathon,” said Jack.

“Plus, we sell the Loomis clothing line, too,” Leanys said.

The Angler’s Closet is open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. It’s located at 2920 Overseas Highway in Marathon.
