Prep soccer season opened for business the first week of November, and teams have taken different approaches to their scheduling. The double holiday break makes travel difficult for winter sports teams, and while Marathon and Coral Shores have seen limited action, Key West was all systems go in getting matches under its belt.
The Conch boys have played two games so far, losing to Ransom on Nov. 11 before picking up a tie against Somerset Silver Palms on Nov. 17. Key West got off to a great start against Silver Palms, with a goal from Nico Sulak in the first 10 minutes of play. Loubins Fleuridor assisted in the score. The Stallions answered back, scoring midway through the first half of the game. Just prior to halftime, Emmanuel Innocent gave Key West the lead again with a goal assisted by DJ Barrett. The Conchs held the lead until the final minute of the game with Silver Palms struck again, tying up the match at 2-2.
The Lady Conchs have already played four matches, with mixed results. They opened their season against Coral Shores, winning 2-1 on Nov. 8, then lost to Doral three days later. On Nov. 17 they played Fort Myers for a 6-0 loss and tied Lemon Bay 1-1 the following day.Â
Marathon’s boys won their opening match 5-1 against True North Classical Academy on Nov. 16. Oscar Cardona and Mikail Marshall scored two each, and Fab Louis Jeune added one goal. A game scheduled against Coral Shores was postponed due to weather. The Lady Fins have yet to play a game, but their schedule picks up steam in the coming days.
Coral Shores’ boys have an even early-season record after a decisive win over Pace on Nov. 14 in which the ’Canes shut out the Spartans 4-0. The Hurricanes lost to SLAM two days later. Coral Shores’ girls lost a close one to Key West in their only game so far this season. The Lady ’Canes will have another shot at the Conchs on Dec. 8 for a rematch in Key West.
