The Upper Keys Football League will have a 6-on-6 league this year.

Signups are underway for the league, which begins Aug. 1 with practice. Each league will play 8-10 games. There will be a league for 6- to 7-year-olds, 8- to 9-year-olds, 10- to 12-year-olds and 13- to 14-year-olds. All games will be played in Islamorada at Coral Shores football field, so there will be no traveling to Key West or Homestead.

“We’re doing this so kids who want to play football have some football program,” Wampler said. “With 6-on-6, we’re aiming for nine-man teams.”

The playing field will be shortened to 80- by 40-yards. Coach Augie Wampler said the league is focusing on safety, as coaches will be certified to teach safe tackling. Players will also have new, state-of-the-art helmets that are super safe, Wampler said.

The league is looking for coaches and anybody who wants to help out in any way. Each team will have two to three coaches. Those interested can call Wampler at 305-393-2765. For more information, visit the Upper Keys Football League’s Facebook page.
