Say hi to this guy at the animal farm, with Farmer Jeanne Selander. MONROE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE/Contributed

The Weekly has teamed up with local author David Sloan to sneak peek his new book “The Key West Bucket List,” coming out in the spring. Each week, we’ll feature an item on the bucket list (hey, you can even tear out the page, take it to town and check the item off yourself), which can serve as a daring weekend diversion.

#57 Make Friends At The Prison

What’s the deal? You’ll miss your prison friends when you are in Key West, but the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office will help you find new ones. Coco the Skunk, Layla the Silver Fox and Mo the Sloth are total animals, and you can visit them all at the Monroe County Sheriff’s Animal Farm (keysso.net/farm). The place started as a safe haven for abandoned animals and has grown into a beautiful sanctuary for domestics and exotics. It is the world’s only prison zoo, and the animals don’t carry shanks.

Do it if: You want to call a friend from jail without asking for bail money.

Skip it if: You have an outstanding warrant for your arrest.

Local Advice: The Animal Farm is open the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month. If you can’t make it, consider sending the animals something from their Amazon Wish List. Follow the link from keysso.net/farm.
