The all-year birthday party for the U.S. of A continued in the golden hours on the Old Seven Mile Bridge on Oct. 10. Bringing together local food, music and businesses, residents and visitors enjoyed a semiquincentennial celebration presented by Monroe County, the Tourist Development Council and the city of Marathon.
Sounds of the Pierce August Band filled the air as guests enjoyed the seaside celebration and munched on Caribbean-themed appetizers prepared by the Marathon High School culinary program. A sunset toast led by county officials included libations with juices from Lower Keys-based orchard Grimal Grove.
The sunset celebration was the latest installment in a year of America 250 events planned throughout the Florida Keys. Next up is a Nov. 11 lecture on “The 14th Colony: The American Revolution’s Best Kept Secret” at the Florida Keys History and Discovery Center in Islamorada.
About a week later, the county will host the Tunnels to Towers “Never Forget” traveling 9/11 exhibit and two paratrooper drop-ins and drone shows on Nov. 17 at Founders Park in Islamorada and Nov. 20 at Big Pine Key Community Park. For more information, scan the QR code.
