The Hearing Impaired are Struggling

LETTER TO THE EDITOR

It appears the act of wearing a mask is going to be with us for a while. The Florida Keys, my home, is home to many “hearing impaired” people. They are my customers, your neighbors, maybe even your family members. It is also me. I struggle daily to understand people who are wearing a mask, which can take up to 10 decibels away. Additionally, it impedes the hearing impaired from using visual cues and reading lips to understand conversation. Even with hearing aids, we are struggling.

Please consider wearing a “clear mask”, especially if you are dealing with the public. These masks are available online (using a quick Google search) and would sure be appreciated by the hearing-impaired population! Bonus: people will be able to see you smile!
