Milagros, a new restaurant that opened after the dust of Hurricane Irma settled, is getting rave reviews on social media from locals who have tried the Spanish-inspired menu.
New regulars at the Big Pine Key restaurant, Lisa and Kevin, said they tread lightly when something new opens in the area. “We have come in several times now, and we haven’t wavered from the burrito and Carnivale with added mushrooms,” said Kevin. While eating the coffee crème brulee dessert, they said they’ll be more adventurous when they return.
The most popular item: The grilled octopus appetizer served over an applewood bacon polenta. Owner and chef Kevin Montoya said the octopus became a theme when they were decorating the space. “My mom is a finicky eater and she even loved it,” he said.
Montoya and his wife Maggie are no strangers to good service, coming from a Casa Marina and Beachside Marriott background. The two are passionate about bringing something good to the community. “We are doing this from our heart,” said Maggie. “We want everyone who comes in here to feel special and leave with a good impression.”
The name Milagros means “miracle,” and that’s what it took to get the restaurant opened after the hurricane. “We had to start completely from scratch,” she said. “We knew this would be the name because we knew if we pulled it off it would be nothing short of a miracle.”
