KEY WEST HONORS VETERANS DAY

Local veterans from three different wars place a commemorative wreath while saluting the Key West military memorial at Bayview Park.

The rain and winds held off — mostly — for Key West’s Veterans Day celebration at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11 at the city’s military memorials at Bayview Park.

Veteran Jerry Hughes of the VFW Post 3911 hosted the event that was live-streamed at the VFW post and included the placing of wreaths on the memorials by representatives from the

Military Affairs Committee, Monroe County Veterans Affairs office, Key West Navy League Council, VFW 3911, VFW 168, American Legion Post 28 and Elks Lodge 551.

Vice Mayor Sam Kaufman read a city proclamation and spoke of his own grandfather’s service in World War II and his family’s commitment to respect, gratitude and empathy for all American veterans.
