DIVERS ENCOUNTER DOLPHINS
Divers who joined us this past week had a once-in-a-lifetime treat below the waves of the Upper Keys. Dolphins are typically shy when it comes to divers. Their amazing senses help them hear and feel divers in the water so they typically stay out of sight. We hear their squeaks and pops under water but rarely see them while diving. And if we are lucky enough to encounter them it’s usually very quick from far away and maybe just one or two.
When a pod of them comes to within feet of you it’s an unreal, once-in-a-lifetime event. And that’s exactly what happened to a group of our divers this past week. The hour-long dive ended and as the divers were starting their ascent to the boat, that familiar clicking and squeaking started getting louder and louder. And before their eyes could even focus, there they were. A large group of dolphins acting almost playful with the divers. After we surfaced the crew was flying high and jokingly told our visiting divers to just hang it up because it won’t get any more magical than that. But the cool thing about diving is, it just might. I have thousands of dives and I’m still searching for that magical moment of diving with multiple great whites. So never say never.
CONSERVATION TIP
If you can’t help dive to clean up the reef, start by preventing trash from falling off your boat or washing down drains and rivers to the sea.
