A California man was riding his bike when he was hit and killed while trying to cross the highway in Islamorada on March 17.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, the incident occurred just after 7 a.m. at MM 82. The 63-year-old bicyclist was attempting to cross U.S. 1 when a Toyota pickup, operated by a 28-year-old Florida man, struck him.

FHP said the bicyclist was taken to Mariners Hospital in Tavernier, where he later died of his injuries. FHP doesn’t release the names of those involved in accidents.

An investigation into the crash lasted for almost an hour as U.S. 1 was shut down to traffic. Vehicles were diverted to the Old Highway as troopers determined what led to the crash. The road opened to traffic at 8 a.m.

FHP says alcohol is not suspected to be a factor in the crash.
