This past Tuesday, longtime Marathon resident and businessman Bill Kelly filed the paperwork to run for Marathon City Council.
“The time is right for me,” Kelly said. “I have always been interested in the goings-on of the city.”
Originally from New Jersey, Kelly made Marathon his home in the late ’70s and established Kelly Electric just two years later.
Currently, he is serving on the Greater Marathon Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and the Monroe County Contractors Board and was recently appointed to the Marathon Code Board. A member of the Marathon Rotary Club, Kelly and his wife Barbara share seven children and 14 grandkids.
“I am for controlled development and common sense,” Kelly said. “I just don’t want to see our island tip over as Marathon’s economy continues to improve.”
This November Marathon voters will fill three open seats on the city council. Small businessman Eric Myrmel and current Vice Mayor Chris Bull have publicly declared their intentions to run and Marathon Planning Commission “Doc Dan” Zieg has hinted that he may file paperwork in the coming weeks.
