CONCH PRIDE: NOTHING SAYS HIGH SCHOOL LIKE HOMECOMING

You heard the Key West homecoming parade before you saw it, coming down Flagler Avenue the evening of Oct. 23.

As the sun started sinking over the island, the unmistakable sound of the Key West Marching Band announced its arrival from blocks away.

The parade started on Kennedy Drive, where Tommy Roberts Memorial Stadium is currently under construction. So the parade route was reversed this year, starting at the stadium-to-be, traveling down Flagler and ending in the Backyard of the high school, where home football games have been played during the construction.

In addition to the band, each of the five senior members of the school’s homecoming court — Daniella Barroso, Menaya Carey, Detra Dor, Yani Nodal and Siena Wardlow — rode in convertibles with their dapper escorts.

Representatives from each class rode in the parade on flatbed trucks donated by Arnold’s Towing.

The theme for homecoming this year is “A Conch Fairytale” and the school is buzzing with the parade, spirit days, crowning the homecoming queen and the dance.

The week ends with a Conch football game on Friday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. in the Backyard at Key West High School, where the crowning of the 2023 homecoming queen will take place at halftime.
