The Marathon Middle and High School bands closed 2023 on a … wait for it … high note.

Under the baton of director Chuck Brooker, five different student ensembles entertained crowds at the school’s performing arts center on Dec. 7 with 18 musical pieces – from classic holiday tunes to Keys-inspired jingles, Caribbean pieces and even Shakira’s “Hips Don’t Lie.” The final two student groups showcased MMHS’ steel drum bands, a new offering through the school’s band program that has quickly gained steam since its introduction earlier this year. Following student performances, the musicians changed places with “Marathon Steel,” a brand-new all-ages community steel drum ensemble, for four closing pieces, including the original “Island Vibe” by Brooker himself.

“All music students have worked so diligently to present their best musical performance,” Brooker said. “Our new Marathon Steel Drum program is our newest shining star for what our amazing students can accomplish. A special thank you to Jen Hagen for spearheading the fundraising dinner and all associated prep. And thank you to band parent president Laura Solsburg and all of our band parents for contributing their expertise to the success of the event.”
