Hi friends! Reef the fox here with this week’s “Reef’s Report.”
Did you notice I got a new column photo? New Year, new me. I’m not a baby anymore, so we needed an updated photo. I mean, I will always be the baby (even though Coral is younger than me).
I told you all last week I was going to let you know what the big surprise was that mom ordered for us. Are you ready for it? It’s a friggin microscope. How boring. She spent $600 on a laboratory quality microscope with all the accessories needed to look at our poop at home. How silly. Mom said it’s a “game changer.” I tend to disagree. I would have preferred $600 worth of squeaky toys to destroy but hey, what do I know?
This fancy microscope will let mom look for parasites in our poop. She will especially be monitoring Coral’s since she still has the bacteria she did when she arrived from the fur farm. I mean, I guess it makes sense and all but geez, I really wanted something cool like a slide or a ball pit. Anything but a boring microscope that I can’t even pee on or play with. Oh well…
So there is something really cool going on Friday, Jan. 14 with Rainbow Reef Dive Center. Join Coral Restoration Foundation Team Divers for an afternoon restoring the local coral reefs. This is a unique opportunity to use your dive training as a tool to help create a healthier marine environment and to earn the Project Aware Coral Conservation specialty in the process. Required tools will be provided by CRF. Rental dive gear is available but not included. CRF dive trips will include any two of a variety of nursery maintenance dives, performing coral surveys for scientific databases, or outplanting coral. Upon completion of the dive event, each person will receive a Project Aware Coral Conservation card in the mail. Call 305-451-7171 to reserve a spot.
Another cool thing happening a little further south is the Florida Keys Astronomy Club and their Night Sky Program. The evening will start with an introduction and orientation. Enjoy learning about the night sky through a group activity and story telling. Then, prepare to be amazed as you use telescopes to view various celestial objects. This is happening at Curry Hammock State Park in Marathon. The program will begin 10 minutes before sunset and it is a free event with park admission.
