FROM THE FAMOUS FOX: PREPARE FOR THE ‘WHAT IF’ THIS HURRICANE SEASON

Hurricane season started June 1. CONTRIBUTED

Hi friends! Reef the fox here with this week’s “Reef’s Report.”

I hope everyone had a safe and happy Memorial Day weekend. It sure was crowded down here. Not that I was out and about, but I sure did hear all the traffic, sirens and horns. I’m glad foxes aren’t allowed to drive because I don’t think I would do well behind the wheel of a car down here on a holiday weekend.

Mom told me a little bit about the history of Memorial Day. Originally known as Decoration Day, it originated in the years following the Civil War and became an official federal holiday in 1971. Many Americans observe Memorial Day by visiting cemeteries or memorials, holding family gatherings and participating in parades. Unofficially, it marks the beginning of the summer season, and here in the Keys we officially entered hurricane season yesterday.

Hurricane season already. Where does the time go? This will be my second hurricane season and I’m not sure if I’m ready. Last year we were lucky but that constant feeling of “what if” is pretty annoying. I like leading a laid back and relaxed life and having the threat of Mother Nature getting a wild hair up her bum just isn’t cool. I know mom put out our Amazon wish list of hurricane supplies. She does this every year. So if you wanted to check out our list and how you can help it’s all online at pawsitivebeginnings.org under “ways to donate”.

Our friends over at Marr-Velous Pet Rescue are having a Yappy Hour tonight, June 2, down at Florida Keys Brewing in Islamorada from 6 to 8 p.m. There will be raffles and retail items available, as well as some of their adorable adoptable pups. Bring your four-legged friends for a yappy good time.

Then on Saturday, June 4 from noon to 2 p.m., the Upper Keys Humane Society will be hosting its Cats, Cosmos and Construction microchipping event. Microchips are $20 and appointments are recommended. You can call 305-522-0260 to reserve your spot.

Well, that’s all for this week. Until next time, Reef, over and out!
