KEYS WEEKLY RECOGNIZES KEY WEST MILITARY MEMBERS

We at Keys Weekly honor the men and women serving in our local military installations. With help and advice from our community members in the armed forces, we’re proud to present our Military Spotlight.

ROLANDO LIMIA

U.S. COAST GUARD/BOATSWAIN’S MATE 3rd CLASS

How many years have you been in the military and why did you join? I’ve been in the Coast Guard coming up on four years as we speak. I joined the Coast Guard because I grew up around the boating scene since I was a kid. Why not enjoy the seas while being able to save lives and educate the boating community?

Had you ever been to Key West or the Florida Keys before your current assignment? Ironically, I was stationed in Key West right out of boot camp aboard CGC MOHAWK prior to my current unit. Went off to boatswain’s mate A-school and was lucky enough to have a shot of coming back to Key West on the FRC CGC CHARLES DAVID JR.

What do you do when you’re not working? I was pretty stoked when I heard I was coming back down to Key West. I love going out on the boat whether it’s to catch a bite, or cruise around to decompress. Fishing and finding something to fix around the house pretty much fills my free days.

What do you like most about the Keys? I love that you get that Caribbean vibe pretty much everywhere you go down here. Just throw on a shirt, board shorts and sandals and you’re good to go.

What would you change about life in Key West if you had the power to do so? If I could change something about living down here, I’d probably bring a Chipotle and Walmart down. I’m sure I’m speaking for many.

Any advice for other military members seeking an assignment here? If I was to give any advice, I’d say: Invest in a boat, some fishing poles and an Amazon Prime account. What do you like most about living here? I love the scenery and access to the reefs in such proximity.
