Overwhelming number support eliminating mini-season

At the end of every July, hordes of visitors flock to the Keys for lobster mini-season. Historically, it’s meant to relieve traffic and competition on the water between recreational and commercial fishermen on the actual opening of lobster season. There are mixed feelings, however, about it. Monroe County does not have the power to cancel or keep mini-season, as fisheries management lies solely with the state of Florida. Lobster mini-season is the last consecutive Wednesday and Thursday of the month, July 29-30.

82% – Eliminate mini-season as it does more harm than it helps.

10% – Keep mini-season as is, as it helps alleviate pressure and brings tourist dollars into the Keys.

6% – Keep mini-season, but limit the catch to four a day.

1% – Don’t care.
