A groundbreaking on the pedestrian bridge near Founders Park in Islamorada hasn’t occurred yet, but utility work needed to make way for the $4.68 million project commenced last week.
Crews from Pike Electric are relocating overhead and underground utilities that are currently in the way of the pedestrian bridge. Florida Department of Transportation officials say final plans are under review with installation of piles for the foundation anticipated by the end of year.
Last January, it was learned that utility lines near the site of the project were in conflict and needed to be moved. Overhead and underground facilities located on the north edge of the FDOT right-of-way next to Founders were to be relocated. Estimates at that time were anywhere from $250,000 and $300,000 for the overhead work and $700,000 to $800,000 for the underground work.
FKEC later said it was able to put together a more efficient design for the transmission pole so crews don’t have to move it. With that change, FKEC estimates the overhead cost to be closer to $150,000 and $200,000. The estimate associated with the underground work hasn’t changed.
Moving costs incurred from the elevated bridge project won’t be reimbursed by FDOT, meaning FKEC shareholders will pay.
AT&T utilities were recently relocated to make way for the project that will see staircases and elevators on each side of the highway leading up to an elevated platform. Sergies Duarte, community outreach specialist for FDOT, said a Florida Keys Aqueduct Authority water main will be relocated this month. Costs to move the 180 linear feet of 18-inch piping is included in the state-funded project.
Transportation officials say no significant traffic delays are expected as work continues, but some traffic slowdowns could be seen. Southbound traffic is being diverted to the center lane near the entrance of Founders Park at MM 87. The lane shift will continue on weekdays for about a week.
Founders Park visitors are cautioned that there will be no left turn merge lane during construction hours. Vehicles leaving the park will be directed to turn right onto U.S. 1.
