The weather dawned windy and brisk for the 14th annual Sombrero Beach Run in Marathon. Close to 600 runners came out to participate, running either the 15k challenge, or tackling the 10k or 5k separately. Many locals chose the 5k walk — no skipping or hopping — and only one wisenheimer asked, “How far is a 5K?”

Jane Welzien of Summerland Key set a 6:49 pace to finish 5th overall and be the first woman across the 5k finish line. The 21-year-old runs barefoot every year.
5K race winner Owen Pitchford is followed closely by second place winner Jonathon Pitchford. The 17-year-old twins participate in MHS’ cross country and track and field programs.
About 60 walkers crossed the finish line on March 7, including Mary Schick of Island Breeze Realty, left. The fastest walkers (not pictured) were Helga Rinneard, 73, of Key Colony Beach, and Christina Cosme, 50, of Key Largo. Both finished in 36:09.
After the race, the west lawn of Sombrero Beach is crowded with revelers awaiting medals, while eating and drinking and bidding on the silent auction.
