Harry Truman’s Little White House museum recently acquired one of Truman’s presidential limousines, a 1949/50 Lincoln Cosmopolitan that was used whenever the president was in New York City. The mint-condition, stretch limousine has 320,000 miles on the odometer, said Chris Belland, CEO of Historic Tours of America, which operates the Little White House museum.
“President Truman used a Lincoln limo instead of General Motors Cadillac because General Motors didn’t think he would win the election,” Belland said. “Ford Motor Co. was more than happy to provide the new president with the Lincoln limousine.
The roof was made “bulletproof” with Kevlar, a new material at the time, Belland said.
Rides in the limousine will be included in the new White Glove Tour of the Little White House. Stay tuned for details.
