What began with a 6-year-old’s petition to the Marathon City Council in 2021 has now turned into an annual trash removal effort, as the City of Marathon joined together with Landry Sayer for a second Clean the Curb Day on Sept. 10. Starting before the sun rose and continuing for more than three hours, more than 40 volunteers worked their way down Coco Plum Beach, collecting 35 bags full of litter before eventually turning their attention to the area behind the Bealls plaza on 1st Avenue Gulf. In addition to 10 bags of trash, the team recovered and consolidated several pieces of discarded furniture, which were eventually picked up in bulk by Marathon Garbage Service.

“I’m very happy that we did this cleanup, and I’m excited that we are cleaning up Marathon and the earth,” said Sayer.
