Islamorada’s Peter Frezza runs away with the annual Old Highway 5K

First-place finisher Peter Frezza glides to the final stretch.

A breathtaking Florida Keys sunrise graced the roughly 150 runners and walkers as they took their marks for the annual Old Highway Run on Oct. 3. With the blaring of a horn, participants in the timed 5K took off from the starting line at Coral Shores High School. Running down the tree-shaded and flat highway, runners and walkers looped around at Forest Tek and back up the Old Highway to the finish line at the high school. Islamorada’s Peter Frezza ran away with the race, cruising to victory with a time of 17 minutes and 16 seconds. This is his second-straight victory. Holly Smith of Tavernier came in second with a time of 19 minutes and 47 seconds, while  Tavernier’s Cooper Cole took third place at 19 minutes and 54 seconds. The race was organized by HNO Productions and Henry Menendez. Cupacabana and Shaka Fresh offered refreshments to participants. Proceeds from the event will go to support the high school.
