Eager shoppers lined up outside the new Aldi grocery store in Key Largo the morning of July 23. Store employees and leadership cut the ribbon and welcomed the community in to shop for milk, bread, meat and more.
A gutting of the former Winn-Dixie store began roughly seven months ago as community members awaited the arrival of the discount grocery store. A soft unveiling was held July 22 with the grand opening the next morning.
Vehicles filled the parking lot — a number even parked along U.S. 1 — the morning of July 23 as hundreds of shoppers sought groceries for more affordable prices compared to other stores in the area. Checkout lines reached halfway back into the store. Shoppers exited with a complimentary bag and keychain.
In March 2024, Aldi acquired Southeastern Grocers and its five Winn-Dixie stores in the Florida Keys. A year later, a group of investors, spearheaded by the current CEO and president of Southeastern Grocers and C&S Wholesale Grocers, acquired Southeastern Grocers. The agreement included 170 Winn-Dixie and Harveys stores in southeast states from Aldi.
Aldi was already in the midst of converting some 220 Winn-Dixies and Harveys Supermarket stores, including the one in Key Largo. The conversion process that began in March 2024 is expected to conclude in 2027. Southeastern Grocers will continue to operate the remaining stores identified for conversion. The four other Winn-Dixie stores in the Keys won’t be converted to Aldi.
Aldi is open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Those shopping at the store should keep a quarter handy since it’s required to unlock a shopping cart.
