A 31-year-old Key Largo woman was arrested on Feb. 17 after a 2-year-old child was found wandering near U.S. 1.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Adriana Maripaz Vazquez Cano was charged with child neglect.

The sheriff’s office was called to Tarpon Basin Drive at approximately 7 a.m. after multiple witnesses reported seeing a barefoot child wandering near traffic. The child was distraught and crying.

Deputies found the child’s residence nearby with the front door open and no one inside. The home appeared dirty and disheveled. Cano arrived thereafter and stated she only intended to be gone for a few minutes.

The Department of Children and Family Services was notified. Cano was taken to jail. The child sustained no injuries in the incident.
