Keys golfers teed off Aug. 31 at Florida Keys Country Club in Marathon. When the scorecards were tabulated, the Conchs compiled the lowest team tally with 165 strokes. The Dolphins finished at 171, while Coral Shores scored a 229 to finish third.
Key West’s Geo Twyman had the lowest individual score of the day, shooting a 39. Marathon’s Emmett Merryman and Roco Piscetello joined Key West’s Jakub Krytinar in a three-way tie for second at 40. Key West’s Mason Titensor shot a 41 for fifth place, while Ethan Wohlers of Marathon and Scout Oliver of Coral Shores tied for sixth at 42.
Marathon’s Cullen Coleman-Sayer and Key West’s Anthony Barrows tied for eighth, each shooting a 45. Rounding out the top 10 were Marathon teammates Jackson Millard and Jack Dunn, who tied at 46.
The Lady Conchs were the only school with enough athletes to register a team score, giving them the automatic win. Key West’s Lexi Finigan had the lowest score in the girls competition with a 47. Teammates Mary Alice Davila, Charlize Lopez and Stella Tutlewski finished second through fourth, shooting 57, 58 and 61, respectively.
Marathon’s Makenna Haines broke the Conch streak in fifth place, shooting a 62, while Key West’s Gabriella Rodriguez and Marathon’s Elleanna Mowry rounded out the girls competition.
On Sept. 2, teams met again, this time in the Southernmost City, but Mother Nature had other plans. Driving rain left both the course and the golfers thoroughly soaked, and the match was called after just four holes. The golfers will try again this week, with matches scheduled across the island chain as teams put their skills to the test on each of the Keys’ home courses.
